Iberia, a Spanish oneworld airline, recently ran the most generous promotion this year as far as airline promotions go – you could earn 9k Avios points for purchasing any ticket online through their website, up to 90k Avios points. Most one-way tickets within Spain cost $30-$40 and therefore many took advantage of this promotion and are now left with 90k Avios… that must be redeemed by December 2018.
Like British Airways, Iberia has a distance-based award chart and all flights on Iberia can be booked as one-ways. However, keep in mind that some partner bookings must be booked as round-trip and some partners have their own award charts. The price of your itinerary is based on the total length of all your flights and NOT per flight.
Fly Iberia Business Class to North America
The best way to redeem Iberia Avios in my opinion is to fly with… Iberia! IB offers lie-flat seats in Business Class and operates a number of transatlantic flights that cost little with Avios. The single best use of Iberia Avios is to redeem them on Iberia in Business Class.
- Madrid – New York/Chicago/Boston: 34k miles one-way off-peak, 50k miles one-way peak
- Madrid – Miami/Los Angeles/San Francisco: 42k miles one-way off-peak, 62.5k miles one-way peak
Yes, those values are for Business Class, amazing, aren’t they?! The best redemption is from Madrid to Chicago for just 34k miles in Business Class one-way off-peak. Keep in mind you can add on European Iberia flights to/from Madrid to all of your IB bookings.
Fly American Airlines with Iberia Avios
American Airlines flights can be booked with IB Avios at a better deal than if you were booking with British Airways. BA charges a minimum of 7.5k Avios one-way in Economy, while Iberia will charge a bit less.. but you have to book round-trip.
American Airlines flights in Economy Class with a total distance of under 1,000 flight miles (500 miles each way), cost just 12k Iberia Avios! If you were redeeming BA Avios you’d have to pay at least 15k round-trip.
If you want to treat yourself to luxury, you can fly American Airlines’ A321 Transcontinental in First Class for 96k Iberia Avios round-trip with low taxes. American Airlines operates flights with the 3-cabin A321 between New York JFK and Los Angeles/San Francisco and award availability isn’t amazing, but can be found if you are flexible. AA’s First Class on the A321 is incredible with a 1-1 configuration.
Fly Iberia Business Class to Asia
In addition to North America, IB also operates a few flights to Asia. You can redeem Avios for Iberia Business Class to Asia and save big if traveling off-peak. Iberia’s Business Class is lie-flat, features delicious catering, a great crew, and good lounges in Madrid.
- Madrid to Shanghai: 51k miles one-way off-peak
- Madrid to Tokyo: 59.5k miles one-way off-peak
Again, incredible rates for Business Class – especially considering the fact that some other airlines charge up 100k+ for the same journey!
In Asia, you can connect on Cathay Pacific or Japan Airlines, however keep in mind that if you add on a oneworld airline, there is a different award chart to use and some trips must be booked round-trip and can’t be booked one-way. If you do not want to redeem round-trip, I recommend booking the IB flight with Iberia Avios and then booking a separate ticket for the connecting flights using British Airways Avios, which let you book one-way. Remember to leave enough time to transit through the airport as you will have separate tickets.
Flights Around Europe
The best deal with any Avios points is to always redeem them for short, nonstop flights as that’s how you always gain the best value as Avios bookings are distance-based. Remember that Iberia doesn’t charge per segment, but rather the overall journey, so you can save big if booking with IB instead of British Airways.
Flying around Europe can be a great deal as IB has tons of nonstop flights available from Madrid (and Barcelona). You can also redeem your Avios on other European oneworld airlines like British Airways, Finnair, and S7. Iberia also partners with LEVEL, Air Italy, Royal Air Maroc, and Vueling on flights around Europe.
Taxes, fees, and fuel surcharges are generally low on IB bookings, however they will be highest on British Airways, Malaysia Airlines, Royal Jordanian, and Qatar Airways.
Iberia Avios can represent a great value if redeeming on IB in Business Class on long-haul flights or on short Iberia flights in Economy Class around Europe. You can also redeem on oneworld airlines and other partner airlines – though keep in mind some itineraries must be booked as round-trip due to Iberia’s rules.
If you took advantage of the recent promotion and earned 90k miles, remember to use them by December 2018 as they will be deducted from your account if you don’t. If you actually intend to fly your tickets on IB that you booked around Spain (for $30-$40), remember to add your Iberia number to the booking so you earn Avios for those flights!
