Lufthansa’s Miles & More Frequent Flyer Program is very valuable – you are able to book Lufthansa First Class whenever you please and aren’t subject to the 14 day restriction other Star Alliance partners are. In addition, Lufthansa offers their own Miles & More members way more availability than to Star Alliance airlines – this means that you can redeem your miles for Lufthansa, Austrian, Brussels, and SWISS Business Class with more availability.
I shared earlier the Best Ways To Earn Lufthansa Miles & More Miles, which included the Miles & More Credit Card from Barclays, flying Star Alliance, and transferring from Starwood Preferred Guest. If you want to earn Miles & More miles only through credit cards, your choices are either the Miles & More Credit Card or the SPG AMEX Credit Card.
Here are my favourite ways to redeem Miles & More miles. It is important to note that Miles & More does impose fuel surcharges, however if you are starting your journey from Scandinavian or Eastern European countries, the taxes will be significantly lower. Furthermore, flights to Japan, Hong Kong, and Brazil have low taxes.
Fly Lufthansa First Class
The obvious one. The main reason why you should be collecting Miles & More miles. You can book Lufthansa First Class whenever you like, subject to availability, and aren’t restricted by the 14-day rule that other Star Alliance partners are (you can only redeem other miles for LH F at most 14 days prior to departure).
The cost of a one-way First Class ticket depends on what regions you are flying to/from:
- to/from Germany to/from North America/Southern Africa/India: 85k miles
- to/from Germany to/from Hawaii/Australia/New Zealand/Oceania: 145k miles
- to/from Germany to/from Central America/Caribbean: 95k miles
- to/from Germany to/from South America/South East Asia/Central Asia/Far East: 105k miles
- to/from Germany to/from Middle East/North Africa/Central Africa: 62.5k miles
The best redemption option in my opinion is San Francisco or Los Angeles from Germany for 85k miles one-way, this maximises the flight time and your miles. You can use the Miles & More website to search for award availability.
Fly Domestic Business Class
A domestic award flight (within any country where Star Alliance offers service domestically), will cost 25k miles round-trip in Economy Class or just 35k miles round-trip in Business Class. My favourite way to maximise this redemption is in Business Class between Newark and Los Angeles or San Francisco for just 17k miles one-way and $5.60 (no fuel surcharges on United Airlines).
Flying coast to coast on a 5-6 hour flight with lie-flat beds in Business Class for just 17k miles is an incredible deal. United is quite stingy on releasing Business Class award space on these routes, however they do still release it closer to departure.
Furthermore, any redemption on United Airlines will start at just $5.60 for a domestic redemption as there are no fuel surcharges. International flights are subject to additional taxes, but no fuel surcharges if the redemption is only on United.
Fly Round the World
All Star Alliance frequent flyer programs offer a Round the World with Star Alliance award and some charge a fortune for it since you can stop in multiple places and cross both oceans on one award. Lufthansa will charge you:
- Economy Class: 180k
- Business Class: 325k
- First Class: 480k
Personally, I value the Business Class award in this case since the amount of miles is significantly less than First Class and most Star Alliance airlines now have lie-flat seats in Business Class.
Miles & More Mileage Bargains
This one is quite incredible. Every month Lufthansa, Austrian, SWISS, and LOT publish a list of routes on which you can fly round-trip for half of the miles – in Economy, Premium Economy, or Business Class! The list is changed every month and different destinations are added/removed.
For example, this month you can fly to Los Angeles from any German airport in Economy Class for 30k miles round-trip. Or you can fly to Vancouver in Business Class for just 55k miles round-trip.
Mileage bargains come with a “booking period” and a “travel period”. The booking period is the timeframe when you need to book your flight – usually months before the actual travel period. Mileage bargains can only be booked online and the normal of taxes, fees, and surcharges apply. There are no options for rebooking or cancelling reduced flight awards.
Regardless, being able to fly round-trip for half of the miles is amazing and I don’t know of any other frequent flyer program that is as generous as Miles & More with their bargains. Best of all, the list is changed every month and therefore it isn’t like this is a once a year promotion or anything.
Fly on LOT Polish Airlines to Save Money
Miles & More does impose fuel surcharges. However, there are no fuel surcharges on United Airlines and the fuel surcharges on LOT Polish Airlines are incredibly low. For example, a one-way ticket from Europe to North America will cost you between $300 – $450 in taxes on Lufthansa/Austrian/SWISS while the same routing (via Warsaw) would cost under $150 in taxes due to the fact you’d be fly LOT Polish Airlines. The same mileage levels apply.
LOT Polish Airlines’ intercontinental fleet consists of only Boeing 787s and they do have lie-flat seats in Business Class, the catering is edible, and Warsaw airport is super easy to transit through.
Miles & More miles are very valuable. On a round-trip ticket you can have up to two stopovers in addition to your destination, meaning that you can visit three places on one round-trip ticket – that’s incredible. Keep in mind that the single best use of Miles & More miles is to confirm a ticket on Lufthansa in First Class in advance.
Miles & More mileage bargains will allow you to fly for half of the cost in Economy, Premium Economy, or Business Class round-trip. In addition to the excellent award rates for the region of North Africa and the Middle East, Miles & More allows you three flight segments on a two-region award – which you could maximise further with a 23 hour 59 minute layover.
The best ways to earn these miles are through credit card spend, transferring from SPG, and flying cheap Star Alliance Business Class fares.
