Aer Lingus, the national airline of Ireland, is owned by British Airways and therefore you can easily redeem Avios points for Aer Lingus flights… and at a great value as the British Airways Executive Club charges significantly less taxes and fees on Aer Lingus.. which means you can save big in money and miles!
British Airways is very sneaky because it does not show partner airline flight awards online and instead you must find the availability on your own and then call British Airways to book. However, the process of finding Aer Lingus flights with award space is incredibly easy.
Aer Lingus North American Routes
Aer Lingus operates flights to many North American cities, all of which can be booked using British Airways Avios if there is award availability:
- Los Angeles
- New York–JFK
- San Francisco
The flights costing the least amount of Avios will depart from the East Coast of America. This is because British Airways has a distance-based award chart – flights shorter in duration will cost less Avios. You will need to determine the length of the flight in miles in order to determine the cost in Avios.
Searching for Aer Lingus Award Availability
Searching for Aer Lingus award availability is incredibly easy. The Irish airline also partners with Star Alliance member airline United, therefore you can simply use United.com to search for award availability. Simply type in your desired departure city (one of the cities above) and your destination – which should be Dublin (DUB). You will then be presented with available flights:
As you can see, the flight above has award availability in both Economy and Business Class. If a flight is available, United’s website will show you the price under the “Economy” and “Business” award types. Do not pay attention to the price shown on United’s website – this is the price you would pay if you were redeeming United miles. Remember that it is always up to the frequent flyer program that you are redeeming through to determine the cost of the flight – in this case the British Airways Executive Club determines the cost.
How is Aer Lingus award availability? From the East Coast in Economy? Excellent! In Business Class, a bit harder, but not impossible. As with all flights, award availability is harder to find from the West Coast, but not impossible. You can use United’s calendar feature to search month by month.
Booking Aer Lingus Flights using Avios
Once you have located award availability on your desired flights, you will have to call the British Airways Executive Club and redeem your Avios over the phone. If you do not have British Airways Avios, you can transfer from:
- American Express Membership Rewards
- Chase Ultimate Rewards
- Starwood Preferred Guest
When you are connected to the agent, you should provide them the exact flight details you previously found on United’s website, including:
- Route (for example: Boston – Dublin)
- Class of Service
- Number of Passengers
The British Airways agent should be able to locate the same exact flight that you have already found availability on. The agent should also not charge you a phone booking fee because you cannot book Aer Lingus award flights online.
Aer Lingus is a fantastic airline and Ireland is a wonderful country to visit. Aer Lingus Economy and Business Class are excellent and one of the best as the airline remains “traditional”. Redeeming Avios for these flights can save you a ton of money than if you were to fly British Airways. Keep in mind that you can also redeem Avios for Aer Lingus flights around Europe.
British Airways Avios are incredibly easy to earn and therefore their value can truly be maximised on BA’s partners with low taxes and fees – and thanks to BA’s distance-based award chart, you can save big when redeeming Avios on shorter flights (such as those from the East Coast to Europe).
As always, if you have any questions, please post them below and I would be happy to help! Happy Booking!
