Alaska Airlines added Finnair as a partner more than a year ago – yet award redemptions on Finnair were not available until a few weeks ago. Alaska provided no notice as to why award bookings on Finnair are not possible for such a long time – however, Finnair redemptions are now live on Alaska’s website!
You can search for Finnair award space directly on Alaska’s website and keep in mind that Alaska allows a free stopover, even on one-way bookings – which means that you can fly something like New York – Helsinki (stop) – Shanghai on a one-way ticket.
Mileage Redemption Levels on Finnair
Alaska Airlines publishes different award charts for each partner – so a flight on the same routing costs a different amount of points with partner A and partner B. Here are the award chart levels for one-way travel on Finnair:
- North America – Europe
- 30k miles in Economy Class
- 70k miles in Business Class
- Europe – Europe
- 12.5k miles in Economy Class
- 20k miles in Business Class
- Europe – Asia
- 32.5k miles in Economy Class
- 60k miles in Business Class
- Europe – India
- 25k miles in Economy Class
- 45k miles in Business Class
You can route North America – Asia via Europe, and you will save miles if you book it all on one ticket vs. two separate tickets. Remember to include a free stopover in Helsinki!
Finnair Award Availability
How is Finnair’s award availability? On European flights, excellent! Which is a HUGE bonus as before you were not able to use Alaska Airlines miles for travel intra-Europe only (you could, but the Air France-KLM partnership ended). You can basically redeem Alaska miles for London – Helsinki – Krakow for 12.5k miles in Economy and even stopover in Helsinki if you want to, which I think is a fantastic deal.
Award availability on Asian and Indian flights is better than availability on North American routes. However, please be advised award availability on Finnair is limited and therefore it may take you a few minutes to actually find award space and it may not be on your desired route or date… something to keep in mind.
Nope! Alaska does not impose fuel surcharges for travel on Finnair. That means the taxes and fees should not cost more than $50 per ticket per direction of travel. Naturally, this depends on where you are travelling to/from as all airports have different taxes.
Alaska’s $12.50 USD partner booking fee will apply per ticket per direction.
You can redeem Alaska Airlines miles on any Finnair flight, provided there is award availability. Finnair operates flights to a number of European destinations and many destinations in North America and Asia.
Destinations in North America include: Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, etc. Destinations in Asia include: Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, etc.
Personally, I am fascinated by Finnair’s Puerto Vallarta flight… yes, they fly to PVR and it isn’t a charter flight, which means miles can be redeemed. I even think it may be possible to fly to and stopover in Puerto Vallarta and then continue your journey either to Europe on Finnair or to the US/Canada with Alaska.
How Is Finnair’s Business Class?
On European routes, Finnair’s Business Class is simply an Economy Class seat with a blocked middle seat, better food, better service, and lounge access.
On long-haul routes, Finnair features fully flat-beds in Business Class. Finnair operates Airbus A330s and Airbus A350s on long-haul routes and Business Class on the A350 is by far the best, in a 1-2-1 configuration.
Finnair’s long-haul Business Class catering is absolutely delicious – especially their creations with blueberry.
Collecting Alaska Airlines Miles
Alaska Airlines miles are very easy to collect. Due to Alaska’s unique partnerships and generous routing rules on award tickets, Alaska miles are valued very high. Here are a number of ways to earn Alaska Airlines miles:
- Flying with Alaska Airlines
- Flying with Alaska’s Partner Airlines
- Purchasing or Sharing Miles (frequently on sale)
- Tip: Buy miles at a discount when purchasing a revenue ticket on Alaska (Fly & Buy Miles)
- Alaska Airlines Signature VISA Credit Card
- Personal and Business versions
- Transfer Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) points to Alaska Airlines
- Transfers can take a few days
The quickest way to earn miles is either buy purchasing them (or transferring them from a different Alaska account). The second quickest way (if you have a few days) is to transfer SPG points to Alaska.
Redeeming Alaska Airlines on Finnair is a great way to fly to Europe – especially when considering the fact that you are able to avoid British Airways’ sky-high fuel surcharges. Finnair provides an excellent Economy and Business Class product and therefore you can truly maximise your Alaska Airlines miles on Finnair.
My personal recommendation would be for you to stopover in either North America or Helsinki on your Finnair award ticket. You can stopover in any Alaska/Finnair city in North America or you can stopover in Helsinki. The fact that you can book intra-European flights with Alaska Airlines miles is very good news as last minute Euro flights can be expensive!
